Sometimes the most ordinary of circumstances can be magical. A rustle in a Redwood grabbed my attention as I walked out my door toward my car. It turned out to be an adult California Quail. I grabbed my R5 with the RF800mm still on it from whale watching. The bird was too close to focus, I switched to the RF600mm and listened for the bird in the tree. It turned out to be multiple adults and more than a dozen babies which paraded before our eyes, even posing on the fence before they hopped up the hillside into Golden Gate National Park.

Hawk on Art Center Rooftop

Hawk on Art Center Rooftop. Pacifica Center for the Arts.Walking outside of my studio for better cell reception brought me in view of a beautiful hawk flying over, then landing on my studio roof. Telling my friend on the phone I had a hawk alert, I hung up, grabbed my camera and quickly tried to focus on the bird. With over a 1000mm in focal length still on the camera, I had to back up to get futher away to even focus. I manged a few images, the hawk then took off, flew right over me and landed on the next building over, allowing yet more opportunities to photograph. I missed the take off, just too close. Looks like a Cooper’s Hawk. It was such a treat.
