Raccoon. Lake Merced. San Francisco

Raccoon. Lake Merced. San Francisco, CA 2021. The dexterity and engaging face of this creature belies the common irritation of them living among us and thought of as pests. I’ve had my share of irritation at racoons in the night, but the wonder of its hands/paws was remarkable to watch. This was one of a pair that invited themselves to the end of our lakeside picnic lunch. We quickly wrapped up our meal and enjoyed watching those two, and six others who joined them shortly after. It was impossible not to try photographing them, particulary as the orginal pair effortlessly climbed a tree. My Canon 800mm gave me a safe distance and a close look. Although we did not succumb to their desire for us to share our food, this one found other options.

Fog on Coastal Marsh

Fog on Coastal Marsh. Highway One. October 2, 2021.

Spending a day on the road wandering south Highway One in San Mateo County feels like exploring my own home. It is as familiar as the back of my hand, and yet always holds new discoveries. The fog can discourage the drive, but for me it often invites it. Under the mist, the world is bathed in a subtle and lovely softness that touches entirely different beauty senses than sunshine does. It is a much more photogenic light and so deeply appeals to my pastel sensitivities.

This drive also led us to meeting tenant farmer who shared his fresh tomatoes, tomatillos, and stories across the road from where were were watching swarming blackbirds.

It was a good drive.
